Hillview is Lewiston Housing Authority’s largest non-age restricted apartment complex and it has a significant concentration of New Mainer families. A youth drop-in after school program is run on site by the YMCA which has as many as 40 students in attendance on any given day with only 2 regular staff members. This program can greatly use the help of Bates students who are ready to dive in with K-12 kids, and especially to provide extra support to the middle school/early high school students. Marisela is a Bates senior who has been volunteering at Hillview regularly and is building out an aspirations program for this age group intended to provide them a space for personal and academic growth. The aspirations program will create an environment that promotes positivity, creativity, problem solving, self-assurance and education. This will be done through an array of activities such as sewing, art, cooking, and STEM projects to name a few. There is a strong emphasis on mentorship; this placement requires flexibility and a willingness to meet kids where they are socially.
All volunteers must work with Marisela Flores Pineda to get their paperwork and training done prior to volunteering at Hillview.
